Untitled

What follows is a poem written by my sister, Germaine Lanaux, in 1971 when we were both students at LSU (brother Bobby was there too). It is my favorite poem. I wish this blog spot would have allowed me to publish it in the format in which she originally typed it but alas it could not be done. It can be viewed in its original form, as presented to me by Germaine, at my bookstore in Fairhope, Alabama. Germaine lives in Dickeyville, Maryland.

I stare amusingly
Poor towel - I bring so much to you
the better part of each day
See the sand - between my lashes
Quickly
run to the kitchen sink
Sustain the brief normality
Gone
Returning - Differently
Anxious to be re-harnessed
within reality
so that I may linger longer
beneath the silver lining
of salted meadows,
and keep staring amusingly

Wolfbeat

The moon quivers to the wolfbeat
I pull my covers tighter
and wonder if your nightgown
has crawled above your hips

I watched a starling search a lawn today
and wondered if I knew how to look
past the plenty that you offer
to the reason that you touch me

Oh to be alone in the forest
and startle ourselves into being
people would come looking though
and feel compelled to tell us we were lost
