I Should

I should be reading Miller to you now
while you are half asleep
and your sex is suspended
between need and knowledge
while you filter the residue from the cries
of those that want you

I should be stroking you now
with no thought of reward
content that your flesh is pliable
that your mumbled whispers
show a deeper sense of gratitude
than a mere kiss

I should be beneath you
while you stretch
to the peak of your desire
offering myself to your hunger
happy to perish
for the sake of your appetite

I should be beside you quietly
ready to make my confession
but when you offer me your breast
I leave a wake of wave and foam
as I speed toward your harbor

Essence

In the early morning
before our senses are dulled
by the vagrancies of living
when every nerve is open
to the possibility of pleasure
we will seek each others confidence
and explore our reasons for being
my words and your words
your thoughts and my thoughts
your essence and my essence
co-mingled into a moment
that defines our humanness
and frames our desire for love
