Hunger

I dance down the road
while on the other side
a coyote, on empty belly like me
watching with a smile
forgets her hunger

So many bottles and cans
everyone in a hurry
to forge their pleasure
I wondered if my dance
will remind some
of what they are missing

cars pass in a whorl of atmosphere
while I am relative, the stunted grass
bares the weight of a measured traverse
any shoulder is a strong shoulder
when one must see beyond their need

I see the coyote has left
Seeking shade until dark
the side of the road is a stale plate
but substance none the less
in the night when her hunger is remembered
I will be a mystery forgotten

A Gentle Push

A gentle push and the familiar recedes
the breath is let out of the clouds
memories scatter like dandelion
to lodge in someone else’s pocket

When we started this journey
there was no destination
and tracks that we would never retrace
were meaningless to our course

What kind of wind blew the dust into our eyes
that made us only see within
even voices didn’t matter
every sound was an echo

We took all the wrong turns
as the lost always do
stepping into the abyss
with the others who don’t know how to love
