Forever Blue River

Between the other shore
and the thicket behind me
a deceptive current carries the detritus
of dreams innocent and evil
and I know as I slip back into the tangle
that if I ever try to cross this forever blue river
I'll never make it to the other side

If I could emulate my imagination
strike a bargin with the furies
throw my shield aside
and face you as an equal
would you offer passage
on the condition
that nothing is fair
in love and war
