True Past

The true past is that place in our hearts
that we wish we could hide from ourselves
the shadow of the times we fooled ourselves
into believing we were part of something special
rather than the fools that we were
how do we apologize to the lives we usurped
for the other's time that we wasted
perhaps we cannot die from regret
but where it lingers life is hollow
