Premonition

Do you remember when a touch was electric
when a kiss was more than maybe
we wanted so deeply
yet words faltered into whispers

We were short order lovers
lust for the moment with no rings attached
we wanted to wake to a feast
but looked to the other to be the servant

I would awake before you
and pretend sleep
allowing you the chance of mood
you out feigned me until we both had excuses

You in a pajama top
and I in bottoms
like jigsaw pieces from different boxes
joined by force not finesse

threads on the verge of ravel
once a touch always a memory
you knew me by intuition
I knew you by the way you kept your secrets

Premonition was how we stayed in touch
I never lost my sleeping dreams for you
funny how empty beds can beckon lovers
with promise of respite for their fractured souls
